Nigerian startup Wicrypt Network is expanding its decentralized mobile Internet sharing network by integrating with Peaq, a blockchain tailored for real-world applications.
With over 2.7 billion people globally lacking internet access, Wicrypt’s initiative aims to bridge this gap through the deployment of more than 1,100 WiFi hotspots across 30+ countries. These hotspots allow users to share their internet connection, earning tokens based on usage.
The integration with Peaq involves connecting Wicrypt’s hotspots with Krest, Peaq’s sister blockchain. Ugochukwu Aronu, Wicrypt’s CEO, emphasizes the significance of this move, stating, “We are thrilled to be moving ahead with this integration and bringing the first hotspots live on Krest.“

As part of this collaboration, the hotspots are now equipped with unique Peaq IDs, enabling them to register transactions on Krest and enhancing their interaction with the network.
The release of a new operating system further simplifies the process, making devices compatible with Peaq off-the-shelf. Aronu envisions this as a positive step towards addressing the digital divide, stating, “It’s the perfect incentivization mechanism to power connecting the disconnected.”
Wicrypt’s approach involves open-sourcing the integration, providing documentation, and releasing instructional videos to support users in linking their devices with Peaq. The initiative is community-driven, aiming to empower users and make the internet more accessible globally.
Till Wendler, co-founder of Peaq, acknowledges the contemporary challenge posed by the digital divide, expressing excitement about Krest’s role as a testing ground in addressing this issue. Wendler states, “The launch of Wicrypt hotspots on Krest is just the beginning as this DePIN takes on the global crisis with top-notch Web3 tools and a desire to make the world a better place.”
Ultimately, Wicrypt’s integration with Peaq represents a significant effort to address the global digital divide through blockchain technology.
