MTN hires Mike Silber as group executive regulatory officer

MTN Group has named Mike Silber as its group executive regulatory officer, beginning April 1, 2024.

The telecom operator announced this in a statement on its website.

Silber joins MTN Group from Liquid Telecom, where he served as Group Chief Regulatory Officer for five years.

According to the telco, Mike played a key role in the development and extension of Africa’s most comprehensive cross-border fibre network, as well as the continent’s largest networked data centre operation.

“These achievements highlight his commitment to enhancing Africa’s digital landscape and his adeptness in navigating the complex terrain of legal, policy, and regulatory challenges to drive business success and improve connectivity,” according to the statement.

Lele Modise, Chief Legal and Regulatory Officer at MTN Group, stated, “Mike’s extensive background, spanning legal expertise and regulatory leadership across Africa and beyond, makes him a valuable addition to our team.”

“His passion for bridging digital connections throughout Africa and around the world is intimately aligned with MTN’s goal.

The firm stated that Silber, who has over 25 years of experience in the telecom and internet industries, would offer legal, policy, and regulatory skills to tackle business difficulties and create creative solutions to generate commercial success.

Mike Silber is a well-known South African lawyer who earned his B.Proc. and LLB degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand.

His significant expertise includes serving on the boards of various industry associations, including ISPA South Africa and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, as well as being a Wits LINK Center associate.

The operator stated that he also served on the boards of the South African Tertiary Education and Research Network and the Public Interest Registry.

MTN stated that it expected him to make substantial contributions to realizing the group’s objective of leading digital solutions for African progress.
