During the 2023 Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) Nigeria Fellows Night and investiture ceremony, ‘Deremi Atanda, the Managing Director of Remita Payment Services Limited (RPSL), highlighted the central role of technology in enhancing corporate governance.

He emphasized the critical importance of adopting technology for businesses to avoid corporate governance failures.

In the contemporary business landscape, technology isn’t merely an accessory; it is a pivotal force for organizations striving to maintain global competitiveness,” Atanda asserted. “Attaining top-tier corporate governance standards necessitates wholeheartedly embracing technology and undergoing a comprehensive digital transformation across all sectors. This commitment is not only timely but also imperative for organizations aspiring to be at the forefront of progress.”

Atanda drew attention to the consequences of poor corporate governance by referencing instances of corporations that had suffered due to these failures. He also emphasized how Remita had contributed to the improvements in governance structures of various organizations, leading to benefits such as reducing fraud, increasing efficiency, and ensuring compliance.

The significance of technology in shaping the future was a key theme. Atanda urged businesses to view technology as a mindset that encompasses both tangible hardware and intangible elements, including thoughts, emotions, and convictions. He stressed the importance of aligning a vision and objectives with a forward-looking perspective.

Notably, Atanda recognized the impact of Africa’s youthful population on corporate governance. He advised business leaders to engage with younger, digitally-savvy demographics, utilizing digital media for feedback and improvement. “Generally, the younger demographics are adept digital users, consistently connected, and they hold higher expectations from brands that cater to their needs,” he stated. “It is, therefore, imperative that we assume a more assertive role in articulating the value proposition of our businesses in this digitally interconnected world.”

The Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) Nigeria event saw the attendance of distinguished individuals from various sectors, including Alhaji Tijani M. Borodo, President and Chairman of Council at CIoD Nigeria, Amina Oyagbola, Second Vice President at CIoD Nigeria, and Dele Alimi, Director General and CEO of CIoD Nigeria.

Atanda was recognized for his leadership and dedication to collaboration in addressing social and economic challenges within the financial technology sector. Remita Payment Services Limited, under his guidance, continues to provide innovative payment solutions to a wide range of organizations in Nigeria and across Africa.
