Nigeria’s New Minimum Wage: Negotiations ongoing amidst revised proposals.

Mr. Festus Osifo, the president of The Trade Union Congress, recently addressed the much-anticipated issue of Nigeria’s new minimum wage, indicating that its announcement on May 1st seems unlikely.

“The negotiations by the tripartite committee-responsible for setting the national minimum wage- is still ongoing. If you remember, the TUC earlier submitted N447,000 as the new minimum wage, but we have harmonized our figure with the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC).

“It is now N615,000. Regarding the when for the new minimum wage, the committee is still working. So certainly, May 1 will not work for the pronouncement of the new minimum wage. Except if the Federal Government wants to pay the minimum wage of N500,000 to workers,” he said.

He also made demands for the committee on Nigerian minimum wage to expedite their activities so that a new wage will be put in place so as to bolster the economy.

Concurrently, the 37-member tripartite committee, established by the Federal Government, persists in further negotiations and consultations on this critical matter, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
