Jide Idris Takes Over As NCDC Boss

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has announced the formal transition of leadership from Dr. Ifedayo Morayo Adetifa to Dr. Olajide Idris, following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a new leadership appointment on February 16, 2024.

According to Dr. Yahya Disu, the NCDC’s head of communications, the official handover occurred on Monday. Disu announced the development in a statement titled “Transition of Leadership at the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention: Two Years of Strategic Development for Nigeria’s Health Security and Welcoming Dr. Olajide Idris as the New Director General.”

The statement read: “Under Dr. Ifedayo Adetifa’s innovative leadership, the NCDC achieved major achievements in fulfilling its duty to prevent, identify, and respond to public health emergencies. Dr. Adetifa’s strategic partnerships, innovative approaches, and unwavering dedication have helped to improve the nation’s health security, especially in the face of challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, the global Mpox outbreak, the diphtheria epidemic, and other emerging public health concerns.

“As Dr. Adetifa embarks on a new chapter, the NCDC staff acknowledges his invaluable contributions, exemplary leadership, and unwavering commitment to advancing the country’s health security agenda, in line with the health sector reform four-point agenda.”

According to the announcement, Dr. Olajide Idris brings over 30 years of experience in medical practice, healthcare systems management, consulting, pharmaceuticals, and research to his new job as Director General.

“Under his leadership as Permanent Secretary and Commissioner of Health in Lagos State, the Lagos State health sector underwent significant health reform in areas such as medical emergency services, human resource development, infrastructure development, primary care system revitalization, healthcare financing, health promotion, and disease prevention.”

“His excellent leadership during the Ebola virus outbreak response underscores his abilities to advance Nigeria’s health security agenda. The NCDC team offers deep gratitude to Dr. Ifedayo Adetifa for his excellent service and leadership to the nation and extends a warm welcome to Dr. Olajide Idris in his new position.”
