As Nigerians prepare to celebrate Valentine’s Day tomorrow, the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has encouraged them to prioritize their safety and well-being when expressing love. Dr. Aliyu Gambo, the Director-General (DG) of NACA, issued the recommendation in a statement yesterday, advocating for frequent HIV testing and sexual health conversations among partners. He stated that these actions benefit not only personal health but also the overall goal of creating safer and healthier communities.
Gambo stated, “As people celebrate love on Valentine’s Day, we want everyone to enjoy it while considering their health. Love is a powerful force, and by adopting responsible practices, we can ensure that it enriches our lives without jeopardizing our health.”

“NACA encourages individuals to adopt a comprehensive approach to love, which includes open communication, mutual respect, and responsible choices,” he said. Nigeria now has an estimated 1.8 million people living with HIV, with approximately 1.63 million already receiving treatment.
The DG expressed the agency’s commitment to providing resources, information, and support to empower individuals in making informed choices, stating, “This Valentine’s Day, NACA will conduct comprehensive awareness campaigns to educate the public about the importance of both abstinence and safe sex practices, ensuring everyone stays well-informed.”
