MTN Nigeria is reportedly engaged in advanced discussions with 9Mobile to acquire its operating spectrum. The talks aim to revitalize 9Mobile, which has faced challenges since key partners exited in 2017.
With 9Mobile’s subscriber base plummeting from 22.04 million in 2016 to 13.79 million in August 2023, the spectrum acquisition is positioned as a strategic revival plan.
A source close to the deal revealed, “The deal is on between the two firms. MTN will start with the spectrum, and you know the implication of that. Spectrum is the lifeblood of any telecoms firm.”
However, MTN denies the existence of these talks, stating, “MTN Nigeria is not looking to acquire 9Mobile spectrum. MTN Nigeria has been exploring national roaming opportunities in Nigeria.”
The denial raises questions about the accuracy of the reports, adding a layer of uncertainty to the unfolding situation.

If successful, this wouldn’t be the first time MTN has pursued 9Mobile. In 2017, the telecom giant attempted to acquire 9Mobile following its default on a $1.2 billion loan repayment.
The current negotiations intensify concerns about potential market dominance, with the control of the spectrum giving MTN a significant advantage in the industry.
Despite reports of advanced negotiations, regulatory authorities, including the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), claim unawareness of ongoing talks. Reuben Muoka, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, stated, “We are not aware. It is not for us to confirm. We are the regulator. It is two organizations that are discussing commercial relationships until they inform us.”
As industry stakeholders closely monitor the situation, the outcome of these talks could mark a crucial moment in Nigeria’s telecom landscape and the broader capital market, potentially making it one of the most significant acquisitions this year.
