Chloe Kelly of England attributed her successful winning penalty kick to dedicated practice, propelling the Lionesses into the World Cup quarter-finals with a tense 0-0 draw result against Nigeria. The European champions managed to hold their ground even when down to ten players after Lauren James was red-carded for violent conduct in the closing moments of regular time.

During the penalty shootout, Georgia Stanway initially missed England’s mark, but Bethany England, Rachel Daly, Alex Greenwood, and Kelly swiftly found the net, securing a 4-2 victory and averting a potential upset in Brisbane.

Reflecting on the achievement, the Manchester City forward shared, “We’re capable of handling any challenge that comes our way. Our rigorous practice routines are yielding results.” Kelly, who had also clinched the winning goal in the previous year’s European Championship final, expressed her joy.

The next challenge for Sarina Wiegman’s squad will be the quarter-finals against either Colombia or Jamaica. The team is now considered one of the top contenders to secure their maiden Women’s World Cup title.

In this nerve-wracking match, England’s resilience was crucial, as Nigeria dominated much of the game, even hitting the crossbar through Ashleigh Plumptre in the opening half. Kelly praised her team, emphasizing, “This team is exceptional. We maintain forward momentum, and there’s still more to unleash from this remarkable unit.”
