Dr. Isaiah Osifo, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Edo State, has termed the impeachment notice issued to Deputy Governor Comrade Phillip Shaibu as an abuse of power and privilege.
Osifo, a former council chairman, said in a terse statement that members of the state House of Assembly have dragged themselves into contempt by embarking on this trip.
His words: “On Wednesday, March 6, 2024, the Edo State House of Assembly initiated a resolution and issued a notice of impeachment against the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Hon. Philip Shuaibu. This kind of action by members of the Edo State House of Assembly is just an abuse of power and privilege.
“Members of the State House of Assembly were chosen to defend Nigeria’s Constitution, safeguard state laws, and represent the interests of their constituents. The motion to impeach the Deputy Governor of Edo State does not fit into any of the categories listed above.

“Abuse of office and the perks associated with elected and appointed political officeholders is a recurrent trait that has hampered the establishment of democratic norms in Nigeria.
“It has become an acceptable dereliction of duty for political officeholders to ignore their constitutional mission in favor of pursuing a personal gain agenda. Political officeholders in democratic and civilized states prioritize constitutional demands over personal interests.
“The members of the Edo State House of Assembly have brought dishonor upon themselves by making the house available to assist this heinous objective. Surely, this sequence of events will not help the cause of democracy in the jurisdiction.
“Indeed, democracy in Edo State is under vicious siege, and Governor Obaseki is providing the guillotine for its mindless beheading.” The only protocols tolerated now are those that serve the ever-expanding ego of a rampaging governor.
“The majority of the members of the Edo State House of Assembly are persons of conscience who are not involved in this political threat. However, the overriding need for bread and butter politics and the need to survive have perverted the good nature of these people,” he said.
