Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the governor of Ondo State, announced his decision to run for governor in the state’s 2024 election on Tuesday, stating that his former boss, the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, would be proud of him as a worthy successor.

Governor Akeredolu died in 2023 after a long illness, and Aiyedatiwa succeeded him.

At the official declaration event of his governorship bid, held at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Arcade in Akure, the state capital, Aiyedatiwa remarked, “I must re-echo what our late leader Oluwarotimi Akeredolu had always yearned for in his lifetime. It was his wish that I succeed him as the future governor of the state, not after his death.”

At the carnival-like event, attended by All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters and leaders from across the state to show their support for the governor, Aiyedatiwa stated that in the short time since taking office, he has done a lot to put the state on a path of development, making him the best qualified to lead Ondo State beyond 2025.

“We have prioritized the well-being of the people by ordering all contractors to return to the sites and breathe new life into the previously abandoned projects.

“We have prioritized the well-being of the people by ordering all contractors to return to the sites and breathe new life into the previously abandoned projects.

“We championed worker welfare by paying outstanding salary arrears and settling significant amounts of seniors’ gratuities. We also ensure that workers’ salaries are paid on time, to the point that we owe no kobo to them as of today.

“Employment in key industries such as healthcare is also ongoing. All of this has quickly restored our people’s trust in the administration, which had previously been damaged by the excessive pursuit of anti-democracy elements.

“Today, I have come before you in response to our people’s popular yearnings and aspirations to continue the state’s path of progress and development. Our people and party supporters have voiced their wish for the continuation of this administration beyond 2025.

“I have extensive political experience and impressive credentials. Without being humble, the trajectory of my governance experiences as a former Ondo State Representative on the Board of NDDC, one-time Deputy Governor, three-time Acting Governor under our late sage, and now the incumbent Governor of Ondo State is too material to wish away! The question then becomes whether or not to respect the people’s desire for long-term good government, which they have enjoyed during the last seven years. Ondo State residents should not be surprised to find themselves in Egypt. Never!”
