Senator Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in Edo State’s next governorship election, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Minister of Works David Umahi for establishing a six-month schedule to rebuild the dilapidated Benin-Auchi-Okene Highway.
Umahi stated at a meeting with road contractors last week that the federal government has devised a plan to complete the Benin-Lokoja Road project in six months.
In response to the development, Okpebholo, also known as Akpakomiza, commended the federal government, claiming that President Tinubu had reignited the optimism of the people of Edo State through the road project.
He stated, “The president has rekindled our hope.” We had no idea how we were going to campaign due to terrible roads; I applaud the minister for taking prompt action. If this is the way Nigeria operates, everyone will want to return. Nobody will want to flee the country.
The Benin-Auchi-Okene Road project, which was awarded in 2012, was never completed. CGC handles the first stretch from Lokoja, Mother Cat handles the second, Dantata and Sawoe handle the third, and RCC handles the last.

The initiative was central to the first motion, co-sponsored by Senators Adams Oshiomhole and Okpebholo, at the 10th Assembly last year. Both senators have increased pressure on the government, arguing that the rainy season will deteriorate the road’s state.
Yesterday, the Edo’Okpa Youth Movement, a Benin socio-cultural organization, praised Oshiomhole and Okpebholo for their involvement in the abandoned highway project, which the federal government has vowed to fix.
At a news event in Benin, the state capital, the group led by Barrister Pascal Ero stated that the state had been completely neglected, with vehicles from the north to the south now preferring to pass through Lokoja or Okene rather than the awful Benin-Auchi-Okene Expressway that runs through it.
Ero stated, “Adams Oshiomhole and Senator Okpebholo, also known as Akpakomiza, have recently proved that they can work with the federal government to provide Edo people with better roads and infrastructure.
“In the twenty-first century, when a governor plays politics with the lives of the people, we will play politics with him as well. We would support the APC governorship candidate so that he can collaborate with the federal government to fix our roads and bring development to our communities,” Barrister Ero stated.
Ero praised Akpakomiza’s leadership abilities, saying, “We don’t want somebody who will come and speak grammar for us in Government House again. We seek folks who are willing to work. We demand action, and Akpakomiza is taking action, as you can see.”
