The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) recently introduced the NIJA Chat app. The unveiling, led by NITDA Director-General Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, took place in Abuja.
Abdullahi highlighted the app’s versatility, integrating messaging, gaming, and lifestyle features into a single, streamlined platform. He remarked, “This is a futuristic app because frontier applications are increasingly being promoted worldwide today.”
During the collaborative six-month development with the iCELL team, NITDA played an important role in refining and accelerating the app. Abdullahi stressed NITDA’s involvement, stating, “NITDA worked hand-in-hand with them to refine and accelerate the thoughts, as well as offered technical support to build this app.“

The director-general actively engaged with the app, testing its functionalities and expressing his satisfaction, saying, “It was indeed a fantastic experience.”
He attributed the success of the app to Nigeria’s young and talented population and noted its potential impact on the nation’s economic diversification.
Abdullahi emphasized the role of NIJA Chat in promoting small and medium enterprises (SMEs), stating, “Our SMEs can use this application to promote their products and services, communicate with customers and suppliers.”
Scheduled for an official launch on January 1, 2024, Abdullahi outlined future refinements, including the addition of a payment wallet. He explained, “When the payment wallet is brought onboard, anyone can receive and send money easily, promoting cashless transactions, which are ultimately the future we are building.”
Chief Technical Officer of iCELL, Abbey Abbey, provided insights into the app’s features, stating, “Today, we are not just unveiling an app; we are actually unleashing a new revolution.”
Stakeholders present at the event applauded the innovation, encouraging Nigerians to download and use NIJA Chat to enhance local content and contribute to the nation’s digital economy.
