Long-serving Guinea-Bissau coach Baciro Cande’s contract will not be renewed when it expires next month, the country’s football organization announced Tuesday.
The 56-year-old joins the list of coaching casualties from the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Ivory Coast, where his team was the first to be eliminated after losing all of their Group A matches. Guinea-Bissau has not won an AFCON match in 12 attempts.
After decades of being one of the continent’s whipping boys, the home-born coach became a national hero in the former Portuguese colony by guiding the team to four consecutive Cup of Nations finals.
