EFCC Docks Kwara Businessman Over Alleged N170m Contract Scam

The EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) Ilorin zonal command has charged a businessman, Alexander Babarinde, with contract fraud, acquiring money under false pretenses, and forgery.

The EFCC charged Babarinde, his company, Ajays Engineering Limited, and a man named Suleiman Muhammed, who is still at large, with eight counts of gaining under false pretenses before Justice Mahmud Abdulgafar of the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin.

The defendants allegedly received multiple sums of money from a complainant under the guise of sponsoring and carrying out some federal government contracts.

The petitioner claimed that Babarinde brought contract award letters from the Ecological Fund Management Committee Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Development, the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, Umaru Musa Yar’adua University in Katsina, the Universal Basic Education Commission, and the National Research Institute for Chemical Technology. However, the EFCC discovered that the letters were forgeries and did not originate from the aforementioned government bodies or establishments.

It was discovered that the defendants collected N170 million from the petitioner as financing to carry out the non-existent contracts. All attempts to reclaim the money, however, proved futile.
