President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been urged to call loyalists of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, to order and prevent activities that could destabilize the Governor Hyacinth Alia-led administration in Benue State.
Dr. Peter Gwa, President of the Benue Development Coalition (BENCO), alleged in an open letter to President Tinubu that the SGF’s cronies have hatched a strategy to use the farmers-herders dispute to wreak havoc across the state.
“Your Excellency, it may interest you to know that, despite the reality of the influx of herdsmen in Benue State, intelligence on the ground suggests that the secretary to the government of the Federation is aware of plots by his loyalists to exploit the ‘herdsmen narrative’ and activate local militia to cause mayhem in order to target the governor and, by extension, your administration.
“The protection of Nigerians’ lives and property rests with you, Mr. President. Individuals’ attempts to politicize insecurity must be discouraged. We ask you, Mr. President, to summon Sen. George Akume to order for the sake of the stability required for growth.
“Your Excellency, we respectfully request your help in order to restore stability in Benue State. His Excellency Fr. Hyacinth Alia has indicated a commitment to working for the people through the party’s platform and in accordance with your renewed hope agenda.
“Mr. President, before the members of the National Assembly use the issue of insecurity in the state for political gain, we implore you to act to save your administration’s face, as the security of lives and property is on your shoulders.

“Prior to the latest killings in the state, the governor approved the full execution of anti-open-grazing law enforcement following a state security council meeting. This commitment by the governor alone suggests a willingness to address the matter in accordance with current law. It is sad that some National Assembly members are being utilized by the SGF to undermine Benue State’s governor in order to raise awareness.
The group further accused the Benue State Working Committee of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of conspiring with the SGF to destabilize Governor Alia.
They stated that the SGF and the state’s immediate former governor, Dr. Samuel Ortom, had collaborated to disrupt the Governor Alia government by exploiting insecurity as the main theme.
They claimed: “The plots have begun to yield as insecurity has worsened, primarily in parts of the state represented by SGF loyalists, and this calls for your Excellency’s intervention.”
“Senator George Akume must be guided to unite with the ruling party’s leadership under His Excellency Fr. Hyacinth Alia, the executive governor of Benue State. Mr. President, the secretary to the government of the Federation has a choice: sacrifice and restore stability to your administration, or resign from office.”
