Mr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, a former presidential candidate and All Progressives Congress (APC) leader, has urged for global peace in light of the latest terrorist assault in Russia.
Olawepo-Hashim made the call in a letter to President Vladimir Putin, in which he expressed his sympathies to the Russian people and the families of those killed in the terrorist attack on the Music Hall in Moscow on Friday, March 22, 2024.
In a letter dated Monday, March 25, 2024, and sent through the Russian Federation’s Embassy in Abuja, Olawepo-Hashim stated that the attack remained “a fiendish assault on live culture and civilization” and that the “horrific act, which reportedly claimed 137 lives (and counting) and many injuries, must be condemned by all peace-loving people all over the world and people of good conscience.”
He went on to say that “the incident further highlights the pervasive nature of terror, which no nation is immune to as long as there are an abundance of fertile minds for evil, which is often difficult to track down entirely.
“Sad occurrences such as 9/11 in the US, the London Tube bombing, and many variants of terrorist actions such as this in powerful nations highlight the necessity of increased international cooperation and solidarity against terrorism and the need to strengthen peace globally across political divides.”

He went on to say that “though Nigeria feels the pains of terrorism daily, Nigerians must stand with Russia, a friendly nation that has demonstrated generous friendship and support for our nation in times of war and peace in the past.”
He emphasized that “not only did Russia support efforts to keep Nigeria together during the nation’s civil war, but Russia also extended economic support for the construction of important economic infrastructures and provided scholarships and technical training for the nation’s key professionals.” Russia was a vital ally of our founding fathers in their fight for independence from colonial control.”
Olawepo-Hashim emphasized that “the bond of friendship between Nigeria and the Russian people has traditionally been reciprocal, as demonstrated during the incident of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, when Nigeria announced a substantial financial donation in solidarity with Russia.”
“Let me add my voice as a friend of Russia at a time like this to comfort those who were wounded in last Friday’s attack and to stand in Solidarity with Russia,” the statement went on to say.
