The Super Eagles have paid tribute to four Nigerians who died while watching their historic semi-final match against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) competition in Cote d’Ivoire, pledging to win the continental trophy in their honor and in the name of Nigeria.
Ahmed Musa, the captain of the national soccer team, revealed this while conducting a sorrowful session of Super Eagles players and officials to mourn the departed on Thursday.
Reports detailed how an important All Progressives Congress (APC) figure in Delta State and former federal lawmaker, Chief Cairo Ojougboh, slumped and died while watching the AFCON semifinal match between Nigeria and South Africa on Wednesday night. Ayuba Abdullahi, a deputy bursar at Kwara State University; Samuel, a Corps member serving in Adamawa State; and a Cote d’Ivoire-born Anambra State businessman died in identical circumstances.

However, Musa stated that there was nothing they could do other than pray for the families of the fallen and commemorate their memory by winning the AFCON trophy for them and Nigeria on Sunday.
A minute of silence was observed in memory of the departed, and a member of the Super Eagles, Chidozie Collins Awaziem, was requested to lead a prayer for the repose of their souls.
“We lost four Nigerians yesterday (Wednesday) due to the game. We will observe a minute of silence, and then Awaziem will lead us in prayer; we will pray for their families since there is nothing we can do, and Insha Allahu, on Sunday, we will lift that trophy for them and our country,” Ahmed Musa stated.
