As Nigeria joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Cancer Day, the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) emphasized the importance of early identification, prevention, and access to quality treatment and care.
Professor Usman Malami Aliyu, the director-general of NICRAT, revealed this at a press briefing in Abuja commemorating 2024 World Cancer Day, entitled “Closing the Care Gap.”

He stated, “Cancer is a ruthless disease that knows no limits, affecting people of all ages, races, and walks of life. It is the top cause of death worldwide, and the burden is increasing. However, with early detection, prevention, and access to quality therapy and care, many cancer cases can be effectively controlled, saving lives.”
“The National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment is dedicated to advancing the fight against cancer through research, education, and advocacy. Our goal is to improve cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as the quality of life for cancer patients and survivors,” he stated.
