A Federal Government team headed by Vice President Kashim Shettima will travel to the 2023 African Cup of Nations final on Sunday to watch the Super Eagles compete for continental supremacy against the hosts, Côte d’Ivoire.
In a statement released on Saturday, Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the President for Media and Communications, stated that Shettima will return to Abidjan for the championship match after representing President Bola Tinubu in last week’s semifinals, in which Nigeria defeated South Africa.
“Recognising the unifying power of football and the immense role the Super Eagles play in fostering national pride and unity, the President, His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, believes that Vice President Shettima’s presence at the finals alongside the delegation is a testament to the government’s unwavering support for the team and its dedication to their success.
“The Federal Government urges all Nigerians, domestically and internationally, to band together in backing of the Super Eagles, to speak up in encouragement, and to generate a sense of patriotism that inspires the squad to greatness,” the statement read.
To get to the AFCON final, the Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated Bafana Bafana of South Africa 4-2 on penalties. Nigeria will play in an attempt to make history by winning the cup for the fourth time since 2013.
