Suspended Zamfara legislators allege threat to life

State

Suspended members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have said that they face threats to their lives for exposing the state’s high level of insecurity.

The affected eight lawmakers made the claim at a news conference in Zaria, Kaduna State, yesterday, characterizing the development as unconstitutional and a clear violation of their legislative immunity.

It should be noted that on February 27 of this year, the Zamfara State House of Assembly suspended the eight legislators for suspected violations of Order 10, Rule 9.

However, the group’s chairman, Hon. Bashir Aliyu, who represents Gummi 1 constituency, stated yesterday that the affected members were illegally suspended and harassed for exposing the level of insecurity in the state and the lengthy absence of the House speaker and his deputy from the state.

Aliyu further claimed that political thugs, believed to be followers of Speaker Rt. Hon. Bilyamin Moriki, attacked some of the suspended members at the Deputy Governor’s Daughter’s wedding on February 24, 2024.

“On February 23, 2024, Hon. Shamsuddeen Hassan Basko Madara was attacked at his home by hoodlums alleged to be the sons of the Hon. Speaker and Deputy Governor, Hon. Bilyamin Ismail and Mani Mallam Mummuni, respectively.

“In the same vein, two honorable members (Hon Bashir and Hon Musama) were both attacked at the deputy governor’s daughter’s wedding on February 24, 2024. “This is unwise and undemocratic,” he declared.

He further said that a united squad of police officers and civil defense people, armed with sophisticated weaponry, traced the suspended members to their various homes in order to arrest them, forcing the lawmakers to flee into hiding.

In what may be considered an additional violation of their parliamentary immunity, the suspended members were sent letters referencing No. ZMHA/ADM/223/Vol. 1 dated March 7, 2024, asking them to return official cars entrusted to them to the Clerk of the Assembly’s office within seven days.

“We want to notify you that democracy is in danger in our dear sympathetic state despite insecurity, poverty, and other challenges bedeviling the state, hence the call for the intervention of key stakeholders to salvage the situation.”
