In September 2022, Samsung Electronics unveiled its ambitious environmental strategy, “Everyday Sustainability,” pledging its commitment to environmental stewardship and integrating sustainable practices into its technologies and product offerings. Since then, the company has been diligently working to turn this vision into a reality, prioritizing eco-consciousness and responsibility in all aspects of its operations.

On August 3, 2023, Samsung took a significant step forward by launching its inspiring campaign, “#Changes start from small steps.” The campaign’s core message is that even the smallest actions can have a profound impact on shaping a better and sustainable future. Through a series of interviews, Samsung aims to showcase the voices of its employees who have been instrumental in creating and promoting the company’s eco-conscious products.

The campaign film released on the same day exemplifies Samsung’s forward-thinking approach to climate action. It highlights the company’s remarkable environmental initiatives, including its usage of ocean-bound plastics (OBP) from discarded fishing nets to produce high-resolution monitors and Galaxy devices. The film also showcases the solar-powered SolarCell Remote, which now incorporates OBP, and the Less Microfiber™ Filter for washing machines, a collaborative effort with Patagonia. Additionally, it emphasizes Samsung’s commitment to collecting global e-waste, contributing to reducing electronic waste and its environmental impact.

The heart of the campaign lies in the stories shared by Samsung’s dedicated employees. For instance, Changyoun Hwang, Head of the Advanced CMF Lab of MX Business, recounted an impactful business trip where he witnessed a baby shark trapped in a discarded fishing net, reinforcing the significance of repurposing these nets for sustainable use. Yeri Park and Hwisoo Kim, from the Marketing Group and Living Product Planning Group of DA Business respectively, shared their journeys towards adopting eco-conscious lifestyles after learning about the adverse effects of microplastics on the environment.

The campaign also features JongKeun Lee from the H/W Platform Lab of VD Business, who devoted months to developing the innovative SolarCell Remote, reducing battery usage and promoting sustainable living.

Samsung’s sustainability affairs manager for the U.K., Jessica Sandhu, expressed her excitement about the campaign, given the range of environmental protection tasks she oversees, including e-waste collection and recycling program management.

The ” #Changes start from small steps” campaign aims to inspire consumers to incorporate sustainability into their lives, recognizing that individual actions, no matter how small, collectively contribute to making a significant difference. By sharing the stories of its passionate employees, Samsung hopes to encourage others to participate actively in protecting the planet.

To experience the campaign’s impact, viewers can watch the film on Samsung’s official YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram pages. The employee interviews will be released on August 7, 2023, via the same platforms, fostering an ongoing conversation about sustainability and the power of collective action in driving positive change for the environment.
