As reported, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has unveiled a plan to train 3 million technical talents over the next four years.

This initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s urgent goal of creating a million tech jobs, a critical move given the anticipated spike in Nigeria’s unemployment rate from 33% in 2020 to over 40% this year.

In a formal announcement, Tijani expressed optimism, stating, “I believe, based on data that LinkedIn has projected, Nigeria can fill about 23% of the current global shortage in technology talents.

The 3MTT program employs a 1-10-100 model, with the initial phase involving a prototype of 30,000 individuals, representing 1% of the total target.

Remarkably, the 3MTT program garnered over 2 million applications in less than 30 days for this first cohort. The subsequent phase, commencing in February 2024 with 30,000 participants, aims to build on lessons learned to efficiently scale the program toward the 3 million mark.

According to Tijani, the first batch of participants will undergo training in twelve key technical skills, including software development, UI/UX design, data analysis & visualization, quality assurance, product management, data science, animation, AI/machine learning, cybersecurity, game development, cloud computing, and Dev Ops.

Fola Olatunji-David, a member of the 3MTT team, highlighted the program’s commitment to job placements for participants, stating, “We don’t want people to learn and sit down in their house alone. We want them to learn and be able to apply what they have learned.

Tijani’s confidence in the initiative’s success is grounded in LinkedIn’s projection, emphasizing its potential impact on Nigeria’s technological advancement and global competitiveness in the tech industry.

This initiative, with its ambitious scale and practical focus, marks a significant step toward addressing the pressing challenges of unemployment while nurturing a skilled workforce in Nigeria.
