“Alex Iwobi did not deserve these attacks. He has a track record of unwavering dedication to duty and an admirable attitude of giving his all on overseas missions. We cannot forget the tremendous moments he has had on duty for Nigeria, such as scoring the goal against Zambia in Uyo that qualified Nigeria for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
“We’re talking about someone who has the seventh most caps in Nigerian football history. With 76 caps, Alex Iwobi has nothing to prove about his patriotic zeal and commitment to duty for Nigeria. Please let us show him love rather than anger,” said Ademola Olajire, NFF Director of Communications, on Tuesday.

Only Ahmed Musa, Vincent Enyeama, Joseph Yobo, John Mikel Obi, Nwankwo Kanu, and Mudashiru Babatunde Lawal (of blessed memory) have more caps for Nigeria than Iwobi, who has been to various countries and continents to defend the green-white-green over the past eight years.
He has represented Nigeria at FIFA World Cup finals in Russia (2018) and Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt (2019), Cameroon (2021), and Côte d’Ivoire (2023).
