Makinde: Governments’ Memoranda Submission For State Police Is A Waste Of Time

Engr. Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State, has criticized the submission of memoranda by state governors to advocate for state police as a waste of time.

Governor Makinde, who stated this in an interview with Channels TV’s Politics Today, criticized the 16 governors for submitting a report on the topic to the National Economic Council.

The NEC reported receiving memoranda from 16 governors expressing their support for the establishment of state police.

The governors asserted that state police would address the nation’s numerous security concerns.

However, 20 additional governors were yet to submit their findings, delaying the NEC’s action on the matter.

Governor Makinde, who stated that he had not submitted any memoranda to support state police, responded swiftly, asserting that the submission was a waste of his time.

“I did not submit a memorandum supporting state police. However, my stance on state police is quite clear. To be honest, I believe it’s a waste of time.

“I did not refuse, not out of arrogance, but because I do not believe this approach will swiftly take us where we want to go. “You’re asking the states to submit memoranda outlining how state police will operate,” Makinde added.

The governor of Oyo State argued that the National Assembly, rather than the National Economic Council or the National Security Council, should address the issue of state police.

He contended that since the matter is constitutional, it must first go through parliament before being replicated in the state houses of assembly.

“The National Assembly knows what to do. They have personnel who can expedite this process. The National Security Adviser and the National Economic Council should not be handling the issue of state police.

“It is a constitutional matter that should be brought before the National Assembly. Then, at the state level, we can persuade our state houses of assembly to pass this legislation,” Makinde said.
