On Wednesday, President Bola Tinubu instructed the immediate opening of Nigeria’s land and air borders with the Republic of Benin, as well as the easing of additional sanctions against the country.
According to presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale, the directive complies with the decisions made by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government at its extraordinary summit in Abuja on February 24, 2024.
“ECOWAS leaders had agreed to lift economic sanctions against the Republic of Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea,” the statement went on to say. In addition to opening the borders, the president requested that sanctions imposed on the Republic of Niger be lifted immediately.
In addition to the sanctions on the closure of Nigeria’s land and air borders, the statement lifted the ECOWAS no-fly zone for all commercial flights to and from the Niger Republic.

The sanctions that had frozen the Republic of Niger’s assets in ECOWAS Central Banks, as well as its assets, state companies, and parastatals in commercial banks, have now been lifted.
Furthermore, Niger has been barred from receiving financial aid or doing transactions with any financial institution, particularly EBID and BOAD.
The message went on to say that the travel limitations imposed on government officials and their families had been revoked immediately.
President Tinubu has also ordered the easing of financial and economic restrictions imposed on the Republic of Guinea.
