INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the personal information of the governorship candidates and their running mates for the September 21 Edo State gubernatorial election will be published on Saturday.

INEC national commissioner and chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, announced in a statement yesterday that the publication will take place a week after the deadline for nominations set by Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act 2022.

He stated that the commission will publish the personal information by displaying copies of Form EC9, as well as the academic credentials and other papers submitted by each candidate, at the INEC State Headquarters and the 18 local government offices throughout Edo State.

Olumekun urged Nigerians to scrutinize the documents, stating that any aspirant who participated in party primaries and has reasonable grounds to believe that the information provided by the candidate is false may challenge the nomination in a Federal High Court under Section 29(5) of the Electoral Act 2022.

“Following the conclusion of party primaries, seventeen (17) political parties have uploaded their candidates’ nomination papers for the Edo State Governorship Election before the deadline of 6 on March 24, 2024, when the dedicated webpage would automatically shut down.

“The personal particulars of the governorship candidates and their running mates will be published on Saturday, March 30, 2024, a week from the last date for the submission of nominations as provided in Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act 2022,” the document states in part.
