Cameroonian health startup Waspito has successfully secured $2.5 million in seed funding from investors, including DP World, Newtown Partners, Saviu Ventures, AAIC Investment, Axian Ventures, and CFAO’s Health54.
The funds are specifically allocated to support the expansion of Waspito’s operations in the Francophone region.
Founded in early 2020 by Jean Lobe Lobe, Waspito is recognized as a health-focused social network often dubbed the ‘Facebook for healthcare.‘
The platform has set itself apart by allowing users to connect instantly with verified doctors through video calls, eliminating the need for pre-registration and appointment booking, a departure from traditional telemedicine models.
Lobe highlighted the urgency of healthcare access, stating, “Going online to book an appointment for later doesn’t really ring a bell when somebody is really seriously sick or someone that needs a doctor right away. This is why we offer instant video consultations.”

Waspito’s unique strategy empowers users to choose from a list of online doctors for immediate video consultations.
The startup also collaborates with partner laboratories for sample collection services, providing users with a comprehensive healthcare experience.
Emphasizing the seamless process, Lobe mentioned, “We have partnered with hospitals in a way that, after consultation on Waspito, care continues in the nearest hospital without the need for additional consultation payments or registration.”
Recognized as the best health startup in Africa at the VivaTech awards, Waspito has already made substantial strides, reaching 650,000 users in Cameroon and Ivory Coast, onboarding 950 doctors, and facilitating 60,000 consultations.
Anticipating further growth, Waspito is currently piloting a hybrid model in Ivory Coast, establishing mini-clinics within the branch network of La Poste Corporation, Ivory Coast’s national postal service.
Lobe outlined the broader strategy, stating, “These mini-clinics, we believe, are the best way to connect with underserved populations.”
With a focus on overcoming challenges related to internet and smartphone accessibility, Waspito plans to roll out the hybrid model in Cameroon and Senegal by the end of the first quarter next year.
This funding round emphasizes Waspito’s commitment to making quality medical services readily accessible, marking a pivotal moment in the startup’s expansion journey.
