The management of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) in Ondo State has criticized the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operatives who raided some of its students’ private hostels located outside the university campus in the early hours of Wednesday.
The University, which stated that the operatives barged in around 2 a.m. on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, and violently woke up sleeping students and treated them unfairly during the operation, did, however, state that it was in contact with the EFCC to profile those arrested in the dawn operation to determine their true identities and status.
Adegbenro Adebanjo, Director of Corporate Communication at FUTA, stated in a statement that the profiling will assist management in determining the identities of those arrested and validating their studentship, as well as ensuring that innocent FUTA students are not punished for offences they have not committed.
While denying that EFCC agents invaded FUTA premises, Adegbenro stated that “there was no operation whatsoever within the hostels or precincts of the university.” The incident took place in private hostels away from the campus.”
He stated, “The university has severe reservations about the date and style of the operation, which is alleged to have occurred approximately 2 a.m. on Wednesday, February 14, 2024.

“Such clearly risky measures should not have been used by the agents. The process should always adhere to due process and avoid causing bodily or psychological harm to anyone.
“Indeed, if not for Providence, anything terrible could have occurred during the operation in the off-campus hostels.
“The University is in contact with the EFCC to determine the identities of those arrested and authenticate their student status, as well as to guarantee that innocent FUTA students are not penalized for crimes they did not commit.
“FUTA condemns all types of anti-social behavior, including criminal activity, and supports any activities to bring perpetrators to justice within the confines of the law.
“The university rules and regulations, as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct in the University Handbook and the oath of matriculation that all students are required to sign, specify varying degrees of punishment for students who violate the laws governing their studentship or engage in illegal acts or odious behavior.
“The Handbook will guide the university in the current situation.”
