Edo Assembly Suspends 3 Lawmakers Amidst Impeachment Allegations

During Monday’s plenary session, the Speaker of the Edo House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Blessing Agbebaku, suspended three lawmakers over an alleged plot to impeach him and other Principal Officers of the council. The suspended lawmakers are Hon Donald Okugbe representing Akoko-Edo I, who is known to be an ally of the former deputy governor of the state, Philip Shaibu. The other two suspended members are Hon Bright Iyamu (Orihonmwon South) and Hon Adeh Isibor (Esan North East I), all members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

During the session, Agbebaku accused the suspended members of being influenced by external forces to cause chaos and remove the leadership of the house. He also alleged that some individuals brought native doctors into the house at midnight on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, to perform rituals and leave charms in the assembly complex.

Amidst the rowdy session, the suspended lawmakers protested, arguing that the speaker did not have the unilateral right to suspend any member of the house and demanded a vote on the matter. The session was abruptly adjourned by the speaker.

Phillips Shaibu, the state’s deputy governor, was recently impeached by the Edo Assembly under controversial circumstances. While Hon. Donald Okugbe was a close ally and notably the sole lawmaker who did not sign the petition leading to Shaibu’s impeachment, it remains unclear if the suspension of the three lawmakers is directly related to Shaibu’s removal.
