The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has begun selling seized food products, with a focus on distributing rice in Lagos State.
The official announcement was made via the NCS official X handle (previously Twitter).
Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), flagged off the rice disbursement program in Lagos on Thursday, February 22, 2024.
CGC Adeniyi stated that the distribution plan aims to enable direct access to recipients in regions where customs operations are being carried out.

He revealed that the NCS gained government authority to sell the seized food items at discounted prices, subject to the verification process, which requires people to provide their National Identification Number (NIN).
CG Adeniyi emphasized transparency and responsibility, urging beneficiaries not to resell rice in markets or divert it for non-domestic consumption.
“Our target groups include craftsmen, teachers, nurses, religious organizations, and other Nigerians in our operational areas. The goal is to reach out to members directly through these established institutions to maximize the impact of this activity,” stated CGC Adeniyi.
Adeniyi also stated unequivocally that any type of profiteering or exploitation of the effort would be unacceptable.
“Beneficiaries must understand that the items cannot be resold.” “We take a firm stance against any misuse or unauthorized resale of the seized food,” he stated.
