Current Hardship An Existential Threat – YPP

YPP

The Youth Progressive Party (YPP) has classified Nigerians’ misery as an existential threat.

The party expressed sadness over the ongoing excruciating hardship caused by decades of insensitive, inept, and visionless leadership, which has placed Nigerians in a precarious position where fending for themselves and loved ones has become extremely difficult, painful, and unbearable.

According to a statement issued by the YPP national publicity secretary, Comrade Egbeola Wale Martins, the hasty implementation of two strategic policies of fuel subsidy removal and naira floating, which ought to have been properly analyzed and implemented after the fulfillment of certain conditions, has caused untold hardship and plunged millions of Nigerians into extreme poverty, with their purchasing power completely eroded within nine months of the President Bola Tinubu-led APC government.

“With Nigeria’s inflation rate now at an all-time high of 29.9% and the Naira nearly exchanging for N1700/$ with no end in sight, it is only a matter of time before Nigerians become united by a common predicament that may lead to restiveness and, if not handled properly, devolve into anarchy.

“While the government may wish to ignore the obvious in its normal fashion, our leaders should be informed that this is not the usual suffering Nigerians are used to, as the current hardship has become an existential threat. Nigerians have been stretched to their elastic limits, and the resulting reactions, if not managed well by our entitled leaders, might mean disaster.

“The governors, who are petty tyrants in their own right, are more accountable than the central leadership. They have been responsible for the stunted developmental growth at the local level, having corruptly frustrated the autonomy of local government areas, state assemblies, and judiciary in Nigeria,” the party said, adding that the governors have refused to deliver the gains of democracy, which would have been more visible if they had allowed democracy to function by not imposing inept leadership through SIECs at the local government level and invested more in education and health.

“The chicken has come home to roost, and our many years of impunity have finally caught up with us.

“While now is not the time to assign blame, we cannot construct a sustainable path forward without first reflecting on the deeds of the past that have led us to this sorry situation. It is time for desperate measures to be taken through a multi-stakeholder approach, with all thought leaders, civil society organizations, political parties, media, and well-meaning patriotic Nigerians working together to find a point of convergence based on a radical change to the current constitution that will decongest the exclusive list, reduce the cost of governance, make our electoral process more transparent, and address the issue of resource control. Furthermore, political will is required to push this process, as the current system is no longer viable,” according to the YPP.

The party went on to say, “Now is the moment to embrace the truth and stop living in self-denial. To believe that things will improve if we keep doing things the same way is to postpone the dreadful day, which is approaching faster than expected. The time for grandstanding and arrogance has passed, as the current government’s policies have aggravated rather than alleviated Nigerians’ misery.

“We are already in an emergency situation that requires the involvement of all stakeholders, and if the government fails to heed our interventions, a mass action led by the Young Progressives Party will become inevitable,” the statement went on to say.
