Citizens’ Gavel Unveils Legal AI For Access To Justice

AI

Citizens’ Gavel, a non-governmental organization (NGO) committed to social justice and legal advocacy, has established Nigeria’s first legal artificial intelligence (AI) platform to improve Nigerians’ access to justice through technology.

The unveiling, which took place in Lagos, was titled “AI for Justice: Highlighting the Innovative Use of AI in the Legal Sector and Its Potential to Revolutionize Access to Justice.”
Oluwafemi Ajibade, a Lagos-based lawyer and Citizens’ Gavel’s operations head, stated at the occasion that the legal AI was intended to improve access to justice for vulnerable individuals and assist them in resolving their legal concerns.

According to Ajibade, the AI tool, known as ‘PODUS’, prioritizes cases including crises, police extortion, violence, fundamental rights issues, illegal arrest, and illegal detention, and it is taught to direct plaintiffs to the necessary support.
He also stated that the AI tool’s objective was not to take away from lawyers’ work but rather to complement and ease it.

According to the lawyer, “For example, technology is revolutionizing every professional field in Nigeria.” For instance, we do not have enough lawyers or doctors to meet everyone’s needs. The AI solution we are introducing for legal issues is designed to assist lawyers in reducing their burden.

“I want them to see it as a way to lessen their workload. It helps to customize their job to that very professional part that they have always provided by eliminating the need for perhaps all of this legal counsel and minor concerns that someone may be able to resolve on their own.”
He stated that using the platform does not eliminate the requirement for a legal practitioner who can assist with documents and represent a person in court.

Nelson Olanipekun, the team leader of Citizens’ Gavel, stated in his introductory remarks, “The AI for Justice represents a noteworthy advancement in our mission to empower Nigerians to confidently navigate the legal landscape and access legal resources through AI technology.”
