BREAKING: NLC Members Picket LP Headquarters, Demanding Abure’s Sack

NLC

On Wednesday, members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) invaded the Labour Party’s (LP) national offices in Abuja to express their dissatisfaction with the present party leadership and the perceived betrayal of the party’s founding values.

The Labour Centre demanded the resignation of the party’s national chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, whom it accused of converting the party for personal gain and straying from the party’s ideology, which the NLC claimed was established to champion the cause of the working class and serve as an advocate for the betterment of Nigeria.

The acting general-secretary of the NLC, Comrade Ismail Bello, who accompanied members of the Congress’ political commission to the LP headquarters, declared their desire to reclaim the party and restore its original vision.

He claimed that Abure intended to hold a secret national convention of the party without the involvement of the NLC.

The NLC political commission made a similar call for Abure’s resignation over the “illegal” scheduling of the national convention in March 2024.

According to the commission’s chairperson, Comrade Titus Amba, and secretary, Comrade Chris Uyot, Abure’s decision was taken without any communication or agreement from Congress, which they termed an “aberration” and a departure from the party’s ideal of solidarity and harmony.

They also accused Abure of running the party in a “sole administrator” capacity, a topic of disagreement that has caused internal conflict inside the party.

The NLC political commission has also chastised the Labour Party leadership for failing to meet the expectations of Nigerian workers and the general public, who regard the Labour Party as a beacon of hope in the face of betrayal by the country’s established political parties.

In view of these developments, the NLC voted to remove the LP national chairman and demanded his immediate resignation.

They also called for the appointment of a caretaker transition committee to plan a true and inclusive LP national convention, with due process applied from the ward to the national level.
