Boeing Plane Incident In Senegal: 10 Injured During Takeoff

A Boeing passenger plane veered off the runway during takeoff in Senegal early Thursday, injuring 10 people and causing the international airport near the capital Dakar to shut down for almost 12 hours, airport management said.

The B737/300 aircraft, a charter flight operated by Air Senegal for privately-owned Transair, was carrying 78 passengers, two pilots, and four cabin crew. Bound for the Malian capital Bamako, the incident occurred around 1 am (0100 GMT), leaving four passengers seriously injured and slightly injuring the pilot.

The jet “came off the runway during its takeoff phase,” LAS stated. LAS, comprising Turkish group Limak, publicly-owned airport operator AIBD, and another Turkish entity, Summa, manages the airport.

Ten people were injured, four seriously. Six other passengers received medical check-ups inside the airport, LAS confirmed. The Diass airport, located 50 kilometers (30 miles) from Dakar, reopened shortly after midday.

The aircraft was “immobilized” away from the runway, and an emergency plan was activated by airport authorities. “All airport emergency services were mobilized for the evacuation of passengers and their care,” LAS stated.

Boeing and Transair have not commented on the incident. The incident adds to Air Senegal’s challenges, with passengers frequently complaining about flight delays both domestically and internationally.
