Bayern Munich to part ways with Tuchel

According to Sky Germany, German powerhouse Bayern Munich and manager Thomas Tuchel will be splitting ways at the end of the current campaign.

According to Sky, an agreement was reached after “fair and positive discussions” between the two parties, and Tuchel will be leaving Bayern.

The development has also been confirmed by the club in a statement that was posted on its website on Wednesday.

The working partnership, which was originally scheduled to last until June 30, 2025, will reportedly terminate on June 30, 2024, following a positive conversation between Thomas Tuchel and CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen.

CEO Dreesen confirmed that Tuchel will be stepping down in the official statement, which read: “In an open, good conversation, we came to the decision to mutually end our collaboration in the summer. Our goal is to carry out a sporting realignment with a new coach for the 2024/25 season.

“Until then, every individual in the club is expressly challenged to achieve the maximum possible in the Champions League and the Bundesliga. I also explicitly hold the team responsible.

“Especially in the Champions League, we are convinced that after the 0-1 defeat in the first leg at Lazio Rome, we will advance to the quarterfinals in the second leg in our fully occupied Allianz Arena with our fans behind us.”

Tuchel also agreed that they “will end our collaboration after this season. Until then, I and my coaching team will of course continue to do everything we can to ensure maximum success,” the statement read.

In March 2023, Tuchel took over as the new head coach of FC Bayern, replacing Julian Nagelsmann. He won the Bundesliga with the team shortly after.

Tuchel’s contract is to be terminated one year ahead of schedule following a series of Bundesliga losses to Leverkusen and Bochum.

The former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain manager has struggled to find the right balance in the squad, and results have deteriorated this season, with Bayern trailing Leverkusen by eight points after 22 games.

After losing the first leg against Lazio, Bayern was eliminated from the DFB-Pokal in the second round and now face a difficult match in the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

The Bundesliga winners are apparently in the process of hiring a new coach, and Xabi Alonso of Bayer Leverkusen and Jurgen Klopp of Liverpool are two of the leading candidates.
