Hosts Cote D’Ivoire don’t have their fate in their hands to make it to the Round of 16 of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
However, luck could smile on them in the last matchday of the group stage should the results in Group F go in their favour as they continue to hang on to thin hope that they make it to the next round as part of the four best third-placed teams.
Guinea who gained four points to finish third are already confirmed home and dry in the next round. Mauritania who stunned 2019 champions Algeria on Tuesday have one leg already in the next round. The battle then lies in Group E where either Namibia, South Africa, Mali or Tunisia could make it as a best-third place team to the Round of 16.
For Cote D’Ivoire, their eyes will be in the fixtures in Group G where they need Morocco to defeat Zambia and DR Congo to beat Tanzania. Should this happen, Cote D’Ivoire can count themselves lucky as one of the teams heading into the Round of 16. Even if they are to make it to the next round, the Elephants will be withoutcoach Jean-Louis Gasset who got fired on Wednesday, the country’s football federation (FIF) announced on Wednesday. “The contracts of coach Jean-Louis Gasset and his assistant Ghislain Printant are terminated due to insufficient results,” the FIF said in a statement.
