Banks and internet providers in Nigeria are facing service disruptions as Yemen’s Houthi rebels continue their attacks on the Red Sea.
According to sources, “three cables” under the Red Sea were severed Thursday when Yemen’s Houthi rebels launched an attack on telecommunications equipment beneath the sea.
“Three cables under the Red Sea that provide global internet and telecommunications have been cut as the waterway remains a target of Yemen’s Houthi rebels,” the article stated.
The AP reports that it is unclear what caused the lines to be breached.
Concerns have been raised about the cables being targeted in the Houthi campaign, which the rebels characterize as an attempt to persuade Israel to halt its fight with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The Houthi militants have denied striking the lines, however.
“The cut lines include Asia-Africa-Europe 1, the Europe-India Gateway, Seacom, and TGN-Gulf,” the newspaper quoted Hong Kong-based HGC Global Communications as saying.
In Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, internet services have been intermittently suspended in recent weeks.
However, service providers have yet to explain the cause of the outage.
The disruption has an impact on banking services as well.
“Please be informed that we are experiencing service disruptions due to an Internet outage as a result of a submarine communication cable cut that is affecting countries along the West African coast,” the bank stated in a statement issued on Thursday.
