Workers at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, Oyo State, protested the medical institution’s power outage, threatening to turn off instruments if the epileptic power supply continued.
Workers at a congress organized by the Joint Action Committee, or JAC, the umbrella body for all unions in the hospital, stated that they had not had access to electricity in their offices in the previous week.
Members of the Non-academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), the Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP), and the Senior Staff Association of Universities, Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutions, and Associated Institutions (SSAUTHRIAN) attended the congress, which was held on the hospital’s premises.
JAC chairman, Comrade Oludayo Olabampe, stated immediately after the congress that the hospital’s electricity supply had been switched off by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, IBEDC, on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, due to an N495 million debt.

Olabampe urged the Federal Government, Oyo State Governor Engr. Seyi Makinde, and other stakeholders to help the hospital.
He stated that the staff would be unable to do their responsibilities as planned unless the power supply was restored.
“The congress is about briefing our members on the efforts we have made on their behalf to address their well-being during the power outage that began last Tuesday.
“We have been facing a total power outage since last Tuesday since the IBEDC cut off our light, claiming UCH owes N495 million in debt. And they stated that we had to pay a significant sum before the power could be restored.
“Since then, our members have had to endure several unpleasant conditions to carry out their jobs.
“We cannot let this continue. So we decided we needed to do something about it. “We must inform Nigerians about what is happening to UCH,” Olabampe remarked.
