Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential contender, has urged the Super Eagles to put in twice as much work against Cameroon in today’s Africa Cup of Nations semifinal.
The former governor of Anambra praised the Nigerian squad for making it to the round of 16 in a statement released on Saturday through X.
“I wish them luck and encourage them to double their efforts as they enter the knock-out stage today,” Obi remarked.
He called the athletes the nation’s “ambassadors,” carrying its dreams with them. “As representatives of our country, our football players carry the banner of our youth,” Obi remarked.
Despite current challenges, Obi insisted “we remain a nation of winners.”
The 2023 presidential candidate expressed optimism in Nigeria’s promise, and shared his support for the Super Eagles.
The Super Eagles face neighbours Cameroon on Saturday (today), hoping to advance to the AFCON quarter-finals. Nigeria vs Cameroon will be played at Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan, where Cameroon beat Nigeria in the 1984 AFCON final.
Between the two sides, AFCON titles total eight; Nigeria has three, and Cameroon has five. However, the Super Eagles have dominated recent Nigeria vs. Cameroon matches.
Nigeria won in the round of 16 of the 2019 championship in Egypt as well as in the quarterfinals of the 2004 tournament held in Tunisia.
Obi consequently supported the Nigerian squad to win against the odds by exerting all of their might.
He continued, pushing the Eagles to do the nation proud, saying, “I support their hope and the promise of the great nation we deserve.”
The match between the winners of Namibia vs. Angola and the West African winner will face the winner of that match in the quarterfinals at Stade de la Paix in Bouake on Saturday at 6 p.m. (Nigerian time).
Both countries aim to increase the number of AFCON trophies they have won; Nigeria wants to win four, while Cameroon wants to win six.
