The UK Government’s Conflict, Stability, and Security Fund (CSSF) invested more than £300 million in Africa last year, boosting Nigeria’s search for long-term security and stability. Baroness Lucy Neville-Rolfe, Minister of State in the UK Cabinet Office, who visited Nigeria to solidify the UK-Nigeria collaboration, stated that it aims to deliver initiatives and peacekeeping to help African states achieve stability for the benefit of people in Africa and the UK.
The fund is believed to have a significant influence in Nigeria as the two countries address common security concerns in West Africa, particularly the threat presented by cyberattacks. The visit comes just days after the UK-Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership meetings, which resulted in agreements on cybersecurity, defence collaboration, counter-terrorism, human rights, and civil-military cooperation.
The UK and Nigeria collaborated on regional challenges to security, with the UK contributing to UN attempts to stabilize communities in the Lake Chad Basin following a decade of extremist violence. Speaking in Abuja, Minister of State Baroness Neville-Rolfe stated, “The United Kingdom and Nigeria are strong security and economic partners. I am happy that the CSSF has allowed the UK to play such an important role in strengthening Nigeria’s security.

“Investment in Nigeria and the region has played an essential role in addressing a variety of issues, including drug smuggling, cybercrime, and human displacement. Our support for partners in Nigeria and West Africa helps secure people in the UK, as these challenges are transnational. Closer coordination is critical for responding to threats and promoting a free, open, peaceful, and secure internet, which is why the UK and Nigeria recently agreed to cooperate more closely together to combat cybercrime.
“As Africa’s greatest economy, Nigeria’s stability and security are critical to the security of the entire region and the United Kingdom. I look forward to expanding our cooperation as we continue to collaborate on common concerns in the coming years.”
Dr. Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, stated in his remarks, “I am glad that the UK-Nigeria collaboration continues to strengthen, notably on critical security and stability problems. The United Kingdom will remain a devoted friend, collaborating with the Nigerian government to properly address internal and regional security problems.”
