NAPTIP Alerts on New Tricks Used By Human Traffickers

NAPTIP

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has warned Nigerians about new tricks used by suspected human traffickers to exploit coordinated global brand trademarks and unrealistic oil and gas job offers in order to traffic unsuspecting youths and other groups of people to neighboring West African countries for various forms of exploitation.

Prof. Fatima Waziri-Azi, the director-general of NAPTIP, reported this disturbing trend in a press statement.

The Director-General said: “As part of our comprehensive enlightenment strategies to equip Nigerians with timely and accurate information to reduce their vulnerability, we have received reports indicating that traffickers have adopted new tactics to lure unsuspecting victims, predominantly to Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Liberia, and other West African nations.”

She went on, “Under the premise of rich career opportunities in gold mining and oil firms, victims are tempted with promises of monthly wages as high as nine hundred dollars ($900.00), which, as always, are plain lies.

“Victims are frequently told to produce up to eight hundred and fifty thousand naira (N850,000) for documentation and other logistical costs. When the victims arrive at their destination, traffickers confiscate their money as well as their phones and other personal possessions.

“The target population comprises male and female victims aged 15 to 35 years old. They are often smuggled through the waterways of Ode Jetty in Lagos on their way to Benin Republic and other parts of West Africa. Some victims are also trafficked using land routes.”

Waziri-Azi reaffirmed her previous call to Nigerians, saying, “I advise you to be cautious, ask questions, and get a second opinion before accepting any attractive offers. “Don’t let desperation cloud your judgment.”
