In the thrilling match at Perth Rectangular Stadium, Morocco’s women’s football team secured a nerve-wracking 1-0 victory over Colombia, propelling them to the last 16 of the Women’s World Cup. The win marks the first time three African teams have progressed from the group stage, with Morocco joining Nigeria and South Africa in achieving this historic feat.

The crucial moment came in the 45th minute when Anissa Lahmari scored the lone goal from a rebound after captain Ghizlane Chebbak’s penalty was saved. This decisive victory allowed Morocco to edge past other competitors and claim the runners-up position in Group H.

Morocco’s journey in the World Cup has been remarkable, considering their opening match’s challenging 6-0 defeat against Germany. However, they made a stunning comeback, clinching victories against South Korea and Colombia to secure a historic second-round qualification in their maiden appearance at the tournament.

This success adds to the overall strong performance of African teams in the competition. Out of the four representatives, three have made it to the last 16, with only Zambia not progressing.

Looking ahead, Morocco will face Jamaica in the round of 16 on August 8. Meanwhile, South Africa’s Bayana Bayana is set to take on the Netherlands, winners of Group E, in their last 16 match on Sunday. Additionally, Nigeria will face England, the European Champions, in their upcoming match on Monday.
