The Senate has responded to the heinous murder of 16 Army personnel from ‘Operation Delta Safe’ in the Okuama community of Ughelli South local government area of Delta State during a peace mission between two warring communities, saying that the perpetrators must face the full consequences of their actions.
In a statement titled ‘Condolence Message to the Chief of Defense Staff and the Nigerian Army’, signed by the chairman of the Senate Committee on the Nigerian Army, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua, on Sunday, the Senate stated that the sacrifices made by the Commanding Officer, three officers, and 12 soldiers during the distressing incident will be remembered forever.
“On behalf of the 10th Senate Committee on the Nigerian Army, I would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, the Nigerian Army, and the officers and men of Operation Delta Safe on the tragic loss of our gallant personnel, who were mercilessly killed by some youths during a peace mission to Okuama Community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State on Thursday, March 14, 2024.

“The Commanding Officer, three officers, and twelve soldiers made selfless sacrifices during this traumatic episode that will be remembered forever. Their bravery and commitment embody the highest levels of patriotism, courage, and sacrifice, and their legacy will continue to inspire us all.
“I congratulate the Chief of Defense Staff’s prompt response in directing an immediate investigation to apprehend those guilty for this horrible atrocity. It is critical that justice is delivered and that those responsible for this criminal conduct are held accountable for their acts. The Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to maintaining national peace and security demonstrates our Armed Forces’ resilience and dedication.
“The Senate Committee on the Nigerian Army maintains firm support for the Defense Headquarters and the Nigerian Army in their pursuit of justice for the dead heroes. We will make every effort to support the required investigations and legal processes to ensure that those who committed this crime face the full repercussions of their conduct.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with you, the families of the fallen heroes, and the entire Armed Forces as we honour the sacrifice and service of our brave personnel,” Senator Yar’Adua, who represents Katsina State’s Katsina Central senatorial district, said.
