Kenyan government personnel could risk a TikTok ban for privacy concerns

TikTok

According to the 2023 study, Kenya has the greatest TikTok usage in the world. In the country, 54% use the app for general purposes, with 29% using it for news.

Kuria East MP Marwa Gitayama, who presided over the meeting, questioned whether there is a policy in place regarding TikTok use by government workers.

Kindiki emphasized that, while there is no policy, the NSC is looking into the problem and may prohibit the application’s use.

While the NSC is still deliberating on the next step, Kindiki stated that the outcome will determine whether the policy restricts TikTok use by government officials and people of a certain age.

However, in August 2023, Kenya’s Ministry of Information, Communication, and the Digital Economy announced that laws governing social media users were being reviewed.

This is not the first time the country has contemplated banning TikTok. Bridget Connect Consultancy CEO Bob Ndolo filed a petition in August 2023 calling for the ban of TikTok in Kenya.

The petitioner raised concerns about bad language, explicit sexual content, hate speech, and data insecurity, among other matters. He also stated that the social media platform will damage students’ academic achievement.

The same month, TikTok established a partnership with the Kenyan government to censor content on its site in accordance with community norms. There was also a Nairobi office in sight at the time.

Kenya is considering banning or regulating TikTok, although other African countries have already outlawed the social networking app. Somalia has banned the app for spreading misinformation, hate speech, and improper content.

However, the Senegalese government has refused to lift the restriction until there is a consensual regulation. In addition, Egypt and Uganda have discussed banning the app.

Furthermore, as the app faces global scrutiny, TikTok has partnered with the African Union Commission’s Women, Gender, and Youth Directorate (WGYD) to increase awareness about online safety among African youths and their parents.
