Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has made a passionate plea to President Bola Tinubu for the reopening of Nigeria’s land borders to ease the country’s current food insecurity.
During a meeting with the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, Governor Yusuf emphasized the crucial need to reopen the borders in order to reduce inflation and the rising prices of key food items.
The administration of immediate-past President Muhammadu Buhari closed land borders in an effort to curb smuggling and promote domestic consumption. However, more than two years later, Governor Yusuf emphasized the negative impact of border closures on Nigerians, particularly in terms of worsening economic problems and food shortages.
Governor Yusuf bemoaned the catastrophic state of famine and starvation across the country in a message released on the X account (previously Twitter), blaming it on rising commodity costs.
