JUST-IN: Protest Erupts In Oyo Over Soaring Food Prices, Economic Hardship

Protest

Residents of Ibadan, Oyo State’s capital, took to the streets on Monday morning to protest the rising cost of food and the harsh economic conditions.

The protest march, held in Ibadan’s Mokola neighborhood, saw a gathering of youths carrying placards expressing their dissatisfaction.

Their cries echoed through the air as the protestors expressed their discontent, and recordings of the protests immediately gained momentum on social media platforms, particularly on X (previously Twitter), with the hashtag #Enoughisenough.

Some of the inscriptions on the posters included demands such as ‘End food hikes and inflation,’ ‘The poor are starving,’ and ‘Tinubu, don’t forget your promises,’ all of which reflected the demonstrators’ general stance.

Despite the peaceful nature of the gathering, armed police officers were present on the scene. The deployment of law enforcement agents follows a warning issued by the State Police Command on Sunday, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for any disturbance of peace during rallies across the state.

The protest in Oyo State follows similar ones in Kano State, Niger State, and other regions of the country, all expressing dissatisfaction with the economic hardship due to the loss of gasoline subsidies, food inflation, and the high cost of living.

In response to growing alarm, President Bola Tinubu recently took immediate action. During a meeting with governors in Abuja last week, President Tinubu ruled out the possibility of importing food products and declined to establish a pricing control board. However, in an effort to reduce soaring food prices, he ordered the release of cereals from strategic stocks.

Despite these steps, many Nigerians remain dissatisfied with the current economic issues, emphasizing the importance of addressing the underlying causes of the crisis.
