The flexibility and power capacity in Abuja have decreased by 250 MW due to the destruction of Tower 70 on the Transmission Company of Nigeria’s 330 kV Gwagwalada-Katampe Transmission Line in the Federal Capital Territory.
According to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the vandalized tower is now precariously standing on the ground. The event occurred on Monday, February 26, 2024, at approximately 11:32.
According to a statement issued by TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the Gwagwalada-Katampe Transmission Line tripped at Gwagwalada Transmission Substation, and the TCN Operators’ trial reclosure failed, necessitating a physical patrol of the line.

“The TCN lines and patrol crew noticed that the four (4) tower footings of Tower 70 had been vandalized, shattering the tower legs and causing the tower to stand on the ground, supported by conductors.
“The incident has reduced bulk power supply flexibility and the volume of power into Abuja by 250 MW,” Mbah said in the statement.
Meanwhile, TCN has arrived at the scene of the event and has begun an emergency repair of the damaged tower and accompanying equipment.
“We underline the need to remain vigilant in the battle against electrical equipment vandalism. It is critical that we report any unusual movements near all electrical equipment to security personnel or the nearest TCN offices worldwide,” the TCN spokesperson continued.
