International Community and Partners Proud of NASS, Says Reps Deputy Spokesman

Representatives

Hon. Philip Agbese, Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, stated that the country’s legislative branch is now the toast of the international community and development partners all over the world.

Agbese stated that the House of Representatives’ emphasis on transparency, citizen involvement, and accountability has made other countries sit up and take note.

Agbese, who represents the Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo federal district of Benue State in the House of Representatives, talked to reporters upon his arrival in Nigeria from South Africa following the just-concluded Extraordinary Session of the Pan-African Parliament.

Assessing the influence of the 10th House’s leadership under Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, the legislator stated that the House has made legislative information more accessible.

He claims that systems for public engagement and accountability have been implemented, resulting in a more open and trusting relationship with citizens.

While keeping the administration accountable, he noted that the House of Representatives has proactively made information about legislative operations, parliamentarians’ details, meeting agendas, bills, debates, and vote records available.

Agbese stated that the foreign opinion of the country’s legislature is changing and will only improve.

He stated that this was further emphasized at the 148th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly, where the National Assembly was praised for its diplomatic efforts.

“At the recently finished Pan-African Parliament’s extraordinary assembly, I was astonished to learn what my fellow African MPs believe about Nigeria.

“From my experiences with many people, the Nigerian House of Representatives is now well-regarded for its transparency, citizen involvement, and accountability.

“There appears to be a higher awareness of the leadership of the House, led by the Rt Hon Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Ph.D. African countries are paying attention to us.

“This isn’t rocket science. The House has made some radical efforts, such as holding consultations and public hearings, to allow residents to express their opinions and demonstrate their interests.

“The House has also improved contact between legislators and their constituents by providing chances for citizens, particularly disadvantaged groups, to provide feedback.

“We are also aware of how successfully civil society groups have been represented throughout the legislative process. Overall, Nigerians should be proud, and I believe they are,” Agbese said.
