Ekiti Rolls Out N12bn Economic Relief Programmes

State

The Ekiti State administration has proposed a N12 billion economic relief plan to help the people cope with the current economic crisis.

The well-designed programs approved by Governor Biodun Oyebanji include the payment of one month’s salary arrears to state and local government employees totaling more than N2.7 billion. With this payment, the government has resolved the wage arrears owing to state employees and will ensure that their local government counterparts’ arrears are resolved this year.

Governor Oyebanji also approved an increase of N600 million per month in subventions to autonomous institutions, including the judiciary and all tertiary institutions, to assist them in executing the pay award for state and local government staff.

In the same vein, Oyebanji approved the payment of two months’ pension arrears owed state and local government workers totaling N1.5 billion, as well as a monthly gratuity payment of N100 million to state pensioners and an increase of the current N50 million monthly gratuity to local government pensioners to N100 million. (This increases the total monthly gratuity payment to N200 million.).

N1 billion has been dedicated to enhancing food production, particularly through land preparation, as part of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security’s tractorization subsidy plan and an input supply initiative to assist small-scale farmers. Similarly, the government is devoting a massive sum of N1.2 billion, which it recently received as the first tranche of the World Bank-financed Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project, to modernize the livestock sector.

According to the government, the money would be used to empower livestock farmers, increase animal output, and create a favorable climate for youth and private sector participation in livestock companies. This would involve renovating all veterinary clinics in local government areas as well as the state veterinary hospital; developing the poultry sector across the value chain, from production to processing; and providing feed formulation and artificial insemination (AI) training and support, among other things.
