Court To Decide Kanu’s Fresh Bail Application March 19

bail

Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has set March 19, 2024, to rule on a fresh motion by Nnamdi Kanu asking to be granted bail in the terrorism allegations against him.

The trial judge set the date after hearing arguments from Kanu’s lawyer, Alloy Ejimakor, who prayed for bail for his client, and Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, who represented the federal government and strongly opposed the bail motion.

Kanu based his request for bail mostly on the fact that he may be unable to present a strong defense unless granted bail and given unrestricted access to his lawyers.

He also claimed to be suffering from acute hypertension and acute heart disease, among other conditions.

However, the federal government objected to the bail petition on the grounds that Kanu was previously given release but jumped and departed the country.

The government claimed that all of the court’s bail conditions had been breached and violated, and it pleaded with the court to dismiss the request.

The head of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) also filed another motion, asking the court not to continue his trial until certain criteria were met by the federal government.

Among other things, he urged that DSS agents not interfere with his lawyers during visits.

He also requested that the court order the federal government to enable him to wear the clothing of his choice.

However, the federal government objected to the proposals, arguing that he has no legal power to determine how his trial should be handled.

Awomolo, in seeking the dismissal of the request, stated that it was a blatant misuse of the legal process that should not be tolerated.
